Watu Ulo Beach is located in Jember, East of Java, Indonesia. Watu Ulo beach which means 'snake stone' is one of my favorite beach in Java. It is called 'snake stone' beach beacuse the legend said that there was a giant snake that once died after the battle, and it's body was cut off. The body part lie in the Watu Ulo Beach, the head part in Banyuwangi. The body part of the snake is now the long stone that lie on the beach.
The place is quite far from the crowd which makes it a great beach for relaxing, fishing and just enjoying the sunset. Of course its not as famous as Kuta Beach, Bunaken, etc. because of it's remote place and also because it has broken wave which is not suitable for surfing and the deep ocean which not good for snorkeling. But this beach with its ocean however, play an important role for the locals. Although not many foreign tourists come to visit this place, this beach is one of the main attraction for the locals. The ocean also provide a great marine life, so the fishermen market become such a huge business in the area.
(the long stone which the legend said was the body of the snake)
Although it plays an important role for the local, I think it really sad to see such a beautiful beach is not well-treated by the government. The government seems neglected the charms and beauty of this place, they are not realized that this place could be the tourists attraction.
Watu Ulo beach has two main beach. The black sandy beach and the white sandy beach. The black sandy beach is on the lower part. If you want to go to the white sandy beach, you have to take a car or motorcycle or even walk to the higher part of the hill. On your way to the white sandy beach, you will encounter monkeys (those are the monkeys who live in the forest of the hill) and also Japanesse cave.
After you reach the white sandy beach, you will feel the gentle breeze of the beach and the good smell of the ocean.
